squirrell

(A red squirrell!)

Mostly I'm an amateur photographer, though I'd love to do it professionally. I'll claim professional when someone I don't know actually pays me for my work. In the meantime I enjoy taking pictures. I enjoy even more the post processing aspect of the work. My most favourite photographs are the nature and wildlife photography but taking picutres of people is fun. Likely pics of people is where the money is since I don't have $9,000 for the telephoto lens I want for bird watching.

I have fun with web design as well though I make no claims of skill at it. I'm not putting PHP or ASP or any of the others on my resume just yet. I've also always loved computers, ever since I had my first computer, a TI-99/4A. I learned assembly on that thing after I purchased a ROM for it that would let me do that for the princely sum of my entire life savings. Eventually I went to university and got an honours BSC in Computing and Computer electronics from Wilfrid Laurier University. That was a very hardware-oriented program so obviouly I spent the next 10 years doing software contracts. The hardware background was handy as I did a fair bit of low-level work and that's a lot easier when you know the basics.

After I got burnt out on the software contracts I worked retail for 1.5 years. I actually liked the work but the pay is ridiculous and as a result you end up working with kids and losers mostly. Also you get poor in a hurry, almost as fast as having no job. Since then I've worked tech support over the phone for HP and for Dell. Plenty to rant about from those jobs, check my blog, sooner or later you'll see a rant on them. Overall though, those were ok jobs because it's instant gratification, you resolve an issue and get a "Thanks!" right away.

Now I'm doing photography and tech support from home and being a stay-at-home father. I fart around with the computers too of course. My health isn't the best so I'm not so sure how I'd do at a real full-time job anyway. Of course chasing after kiddo isn't so easy either but the reward is huge.

I won't likely update this particular page often, the blog can take care of that easily enough if you want to know what's bubbling through my head.
