ComputerI do tech support too. Whoopty-do. I worked for HP for a while doing tech support for their consumer-level inkjet All-In-One printers for customers who used them on a Mac.That job sucked some ass because it seemed like HP had very little interest in actually supporting that particular segment of the market. They certainly didn't help us help the customers. The next one I did was for their Designjet inkjet printers which are pretty much only sold to businesses, mainly because the cheapest ancient one cost over $5,000. Most of what we supported cost three times that so it was usually businesses. That one wasn't too bad. There were only seven of us and we had a lot of autonomy. After HP I went to Dell to support their XPS line of PCs. Those are Dell's gaming machine offering, pretty slick machines and they came with 'premium' support, basically a bunch of Canadians and we got some pretty reasonable training and support behind us. That was a great job until the US dollar dropped and Dell decided to squeeze us hard while they set up our replacements in the Phillipines. I've called since then when my own XPS's motherboard died. I didn't have an issue with the accent but of course I'm not American. The person I spoke to was much more understandable than calls I've made to India for other things. A sample size of one is not a good statistical basis so don't take this as an endorsement or anything. I'm still a little bitter at being laid off after only a year and a bunch of promises. So now I do local tech support, mostly for neighbours. It's not a reliable source of income but it doesn't suck because my neighbours are nice. I've bartered work for gardening and flowers, and favours for favours. It's not bad and can't be taxed. My current computer stuff
I have three computers
and a pile of parts. I used to have a LOT more parts. I would take old systems that didn't work and make ones that did by swapping parts. Then I'd find a home for the working one. I did manage to get rid of a couple that way and people kept giving me oldies to work with. Somewhere along the line I realized all that stuff was taking up a lot of space. A buddy does the same thing so I ended up giving him most of my loot. He got a couple going and found homes. I also ended up recycling 5 CRT monitors at 56 cents a pound. Since one was a heavy 21" that ended up costing me a bundle. Hopefully it was worth it and all that toxic crap isn't just being dumped into my kid's drinking water when nobody is looking. |
